Duff House, Banff

Duff House is an historic house and arts centre managed by Aberdeenshire Council in partnership with Historic Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland.

The house was designed by William Adam and built between 1735 and 1740 for William Duff, Lord Braco, MP, as the family seat of the Earls of Fife. When the family was in residence, an army of servants would have kept the house and policies running smoothly, and the estate ran as far as the eye could see.

In 1906, the family left and the house was in turn a country house hotel, sanatorium and most recently, during the Second World War, a prisoner of war camp and military HQ for Allied troops.

Today, after extensive refurbishment by Historic Scotland, Duff House contains a stunning collection of paintings and furniture on loan from the National collections. Visitors can see portraits by Raeburn, Reynolds, Gainsborough and El Greco alongside furniture by Chippendale. Throughout the year there are exhibitions, quizzes, talks and art-related activities and a varied events programme for all ages and interests, including concerts, open air theatre and a vintage car rally.

The house is fully accessible with excellent disabled facilities: there is a lift to all floors; access on ground level and an induction loop. There is disabled parking alongside, an excellent children’s playground, plenty of parking, and a coach park nearby (located at Duff House Royal Golf Club).

With extensive grounds and woodland walks by the river Deveron, you will find a day is not enough.
