Banff Castle
Banff Castle is situated in the centre of Banff, in four acres of its own grounds, overlooking Banff Bay and the Moray Firth. It is a Georgian Mansion, designed and built by John Adam in 1750 for the Earl of Seafield. The curtain walls are all that are left of the original castle and can be dated back to 1250 - believed to be the oldest castle walls still standing in Scotland.
Festivals, exhibitions, cinema, music, dancing and exercise are among but a few of the cultural activities which go on at the castle. As a community facility we welcome locals and visitors to all the events and activities which go on here.
Purchased through public subscription after WWII, Banff Castle is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee year. It is an amazing asset to the community of Banff. On entering the grounds from Castle Street, it feels as though you have passed into the grounds of a private house, but you haven’t. Feel free to wander. Relax on the seats. Picnic on the lawn or just breath in the tranquility. The views over the bay are breathtaking, unrivalled and are a favourite backdrop for wedding photographs. During the summer season dolphins and whales can be seen competing with the vast range of seabirds, including gannets and terns, feeding and frolicking by the mouth of the Deveron where it enters Banff Bay.
Events and activities planned for the remainder of our diamond jubilee year:
Cinema Experience – fortnightly screenings throughout the year, on Fridays (7.30pm) and Saturdays (2.30pm)
May-September – Dolphin Diaries
July 23rd-24th – Banffshire History Festival - Medieval Re-enactment
September 9th -18th NEOS arts and craft exhibition
