If you want to experience surfing the ocean rather than just the web, then you’ll find excellent surfing conditions on the Banffshire Coast. Golden sands open out onto wild rugged bays and some say the surfing here is as good as that in Cornwall – but without all the teenage crowds. And it’s a sport for all ages; the local surfing club’s youngest member was three – and its oldest 83! But if you don’t know your lay out from your line up then perhaps a more sedate sport will suit?
The area has several excellent golf courses, including Cullen and Royal Tarlair, outside Macduff.
When is a golf course not a golf course?
When it’s a piece of land with empty cocoa tins plugged into the greens. Keen golfers will be pleased to know that the inventive residents of Macduff were able to turn their home-spun course into a spectacular 18 hole course now known as Royal Tarlair.
Do not miss the 13th hole, “The Clivet", a hole that every golfer just has to experience – described by one Golf Europe reviewer as “the best golf hole I have ever played.” It will test your nerve and resolve to the limit. The ‘enchanting hideaway’ of Cullen Golf Course provides an equally stunning backdrop, where the outward nine are played close to the cliff edge and the inward nine play back along at beach level.
The River Deveron is a river much loved by anglers who return year after year – for generations. salmon, brown trout, sea trout and grilse – many large enough not to need the traditional fisherman’s exaggeration – are fished here. At Cuminestown there’s also the chance to go riding and trekking.
