The Banffshire Coast has been home to generations of families for many centuries. The sea-faring nature of our inhabitants has resulted in many far flung diasporas of local families. If you believe your family originated from here, the area can provide useful clues in tracing your roots and can provide an exciting quest for your next holiday. From ancient graveyards to local records, there is fascinating information about the past just waiting to be discovered.
Further information on genealogy can be found at:
Portsoy Salmon Bothy
The Salmon Bothy at Portsoy offers a unique facility which allows visitors to explore their roots. Housed in the former Bothy sleeping quarters is a research centre fully equipped with helpful information and computer software and to assist in tracing ancestors. Museum staff are happy to offer guidance on how to make a start, and for more in depth assistance, a qualified tutor is also available by appointment. The Salmon Bothy also operates as a Museum and Heritage Centre providing an insight into local history, in particular the salmon fishing and the trade and industry of Portsoy and the surrounding area. Look out for the Salmon Bothy stand at Family History Fairs in the area throughout the year.

Gene Genie Scotland
A brand new ancestral research service for North-East Scotland has just been launched. Gene Genie Scotland was established by genealogy enthusiast Alison Smith, whose credentials include a Postgraduate Certificate in Family History in addition to practical experience in Scottish ancestral research and voluntary work as genealogy coordinator for the Salmon Bothy.
The services offered by Gene Genie Scotland are likely to appeal to anyone interested in tracing their roots in North-East Scotland, whether they’re based in Banffshire, Buffalo or Brisbane:
-
A full genealogical research service is available for anyone who wishes to explore their own Scottish ancestry but for whom personal research is not a practical option.
-
For those who are keen to embark on their own family history project, Gene Genie Scotland can offer one-to-one guided research, providing individual tuition in record sources and search techniques. Guided research sessions can be booked by appointment, normally at the Portsoy Salmon Bothy.
-
Transcription and interpretation of historical documents is available for anyone who needs help in deciphering and making sense of old handwriting.
-
A novel feature of the Gene Genie Scotland service is ancestral tourism planning, for which the target market is primarily overseas clients. Retracing the steps of their Scottish forebears is often the motivation for a visit to Scotland, but poor local knowledge can mean that this category of tourist is only partially successful in fulfilling their aims. By identifying the locations which hold personal signficance for each individual, Gene Genie Scotland can create a custom itinerary designed to maximise the benefit of time spent touring Scotland.
